About

My goal when designing a room is to create a beautiful, functional, organized space that is just as comfortable as it is aesthetically pleasing. I believe a room should feel cohesive and edited, with beautiful natural materials and textures incorporated throughout. I believe the best things take time to find, whether it’s a vintage, one-of-a-kind rug with the perfect pattern or an antique vase that was made by hand. I believe that the smallest details are just as important as the big pieces in a room. I believe in designing slowly, taking in the flow of the rooms, the space, the people who live there, and how it can be best utilized for those who call it home.

Natural Materials

There’s something about real stone countertops, natural wood or a linen throw; they get better with age. A natural material settles in and, over time, becomes a part of the house. Its imperfections, occurring naturally over time, only add to its beauty. Nothing beats a well-worn leather couch, an aged piece of marble or wood that carries years of memories in its patina.

Mixing Old & New

I strive for clean lines, editing, and a general minimalist look. I also feel it's important to incorporate objects that have a history and a tangible feel that often doesn't accompany brand new items. A modern sofa paired with a handmade throw or vintage rug offsets the new veneer of the sofa. A clean mid-century piece of furniture topped with antique pottery balances the straight lines with organic shapes. Vintage baskets and boxes housing ordinary items make them less ordinary.

Details

Details are what separates the well-designed space from the poorly designed. I obsess over the smallest details to ensure perfection. Do all of the colors feel cohesive? Does the bathroom towel add something to the overall feeling of the room? Does the hook on the wall bring something besides function? I believe you can get away with less when each item’s details are well-considered.

Plants

In my opinion, plants enhance any room and I like to add them wherever possible. Varying heights, leaf sizes and general shapes add interest and life to the simplest rooms, indoor or out. A beautiful shaped tree or plant against a plain wall can be a piece of art in itself.

Adding layers of textures in a similar color story adds depth and interest while maintaining a minimalist color palette.

Background

After graduating from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, I worked as a graphic designer and Art Director for over a decade for small design shops, large ad agencies, and for myself. I continue to take on traditional design projects with my husband at McQuade Inc. along with my home design and styling business. I’ve always had an interest in home design, and spend any free time I have obsessing over design details. I’ve found that my background as a graphic designer and my knowledge of design principles translate seamlessly into home design. Things like composition, color stories, balance and scale easily transfer from the page to a room.
